The Great Orchid Watering Debate
Many of you have asked us questions about your orchids. One of the biggest debates about orchids is about watering them. There are two camps when it comes to watering your orchid. Those who believe you should water them with warm water and those who believe you should water them with ice.
Whichever you are going to choose, you only need to water your orchid once a week! Yes, folks, that’s the truth. Many orchids die because of overwatering. In one camp, we have the people who believe in using water to hydrate their orchid plants. If you’re one of these folks, we recommend that you use either rainwater or reverse osmosis water for orchids because this kind of water is the most pure. (Many bottled water brands use reverse osmosis) Each orchid needs only ¼ cup of warm water once a week. In the other camp we have the people who believe in using ice cubes to hydrate their plants. It is recommended that you use 3 ice cubes to water your orchid and that you place them at the base of the stem under the leaves. Some have said that there are issues with the 3 ice cubes method because iced cube size isn’t regulated. If you’re questioning whether your ice cubes are enough water, let them melt into a measuring cup and see if they equal ¼ cup. If needed, add more ice to equal ¼ cup of water and then give your orchids that amount of ice each time. Which camp are you going to choose?
